The Catedral De La Inmaculada Concepción is the main Catholic church for the diocese of Tampico, a city and port in the southeastern part of the Mexican state of Tamaulipas.
Prominently located in front of the Plaza de Armas in the Historic Centre of the city, this iconic and architecturally important building is much loved by worshippers, although the consistency of speech intelligibility throughout the venue has, until recently, been less than ideal.
All that changed with the installation by Tacea Music of a new NEXO ID Series sound system.
“Thanks to the professionalism and care of Jorge Tace Del Campo and the team at Tacea Music it was possible to implement an effective, aesthetically respectful and technically sound solution for this unique space” reports Carlos Hernadez, Market Development for NEXO’s distributor in Mexico, Representaciones de Audio.
“One of the main challenges when designing sound reinforcement systems in worship spaces like the Cathedral of Tampico is the high level of reverberation typical of such buildings. Their architecture, characterised by high ceilings, domes, parallel surfaces, stone or concrete walls, and highly reflective finishes on both walls and floors, significantly compromises speech intelligibility.
“In light of these constraints, the optimal solution was found in NEXO’s ID84 column speakers and ID24 point source.
“These column-type speakers feature a sleek, discreet design and advanced technical capabilities, allowing it to function acoustically as a compact line array. This setup offers tightly controlled vertical coverage (up to ±10° depending on configuration), effectively reducing unwanted reverberation by minimising surface excitation.
“Thanks to these attributes, the ID84 can be wall-mounted like a point source while delivering the directivity control benefits of a line array. This solution not only preserves the historic architecture of the cathedral but also ensures excellent coverage and intelligibility throughout the venue.
“In summary, the implementation of the NEXO ID84 system in the Cathedral of Tampico serves as a prime example of how well-applied technology can solve complex acoustic challenges in heritage spaces, maintaining both aesthetic and structural integrity.”
