A new multipurpose venue in the small town of Vilablareix near Girona in Catalonia promises residents and visitors a rich programme of cultural events, with pristine audio quality assured by a NEXO sound system installed by local AV and event technology specialists BTM Sound.
In winning the public tender, Robert Reig and the team at BTM were supported by NEXO’s Spanish distributor Soundmeans who proposed a NEXO P18 point source system in response to a challenging brief and a relatively tight budget.
“The main challenge of the project was to have an electroacoustic system powerful and versatile enough to serve the diversity of content programmed in the venue – from speech and dance theatre to concerts with high sound pressure levels – guaranteeing homogeneous coverage over the entire venue in all cases, without spots of bad coverage or spots with too much pressure due to interference between speakers” reports Robert.
“The uniqueness of the space – a hall with a working height of only 6 meters – determined the type of system to be installed. A conventional line array requires a certain vertical distance for the sources to be coupled correctly and also would be a big cluster that would interfere physically with the lighting truss. With this point-source system we have achieved a low visual impact and high SPL levels.
“For this reason, the Nexo P+ Series system was chosen, specifically a point source cluster formed by P18 and L18 subwoofers” continues Robert. “This coaxial configuration ensures perfect phase alignment between channels and a great acoustic point source, a key factor for both tonal coherence and minimising the visual footprint of the cluster.
“The system is processed by a NEXO NXAMP4X2Mk2 amplifier, which handles EQ, phase alignment and crossovers, while providing the system with specific thermal and excursion protection, ensuring the system always operates within its optimal performance margins, even at the SPL levels required for the concerts, without compromising the speech intelligibility required for theatre use.
“For bass reinforcement L18 subs were incorporated, which allowed for them to be flown together with the P18 speakers, providing the bass extension necessary for any music shows, maintaining the same criteria of visual discretion as the rest of the system.
“For the future, it is planned to implement a front-fill system to reinforce the coverage for the first rows, as the vertical angle of the main cluster is designed to optimise coverage of the middle and back seats” says Robert in conclusion.
“Still, during the first shows the customer and the artists were very satisfied and surprised with the system performance.”
