ZULU CULTURE MEETS NEXO SURROUND SOUND

The KwaZulu Cultural Museum at Ondini, near Ulundi — which opened in 1984 on the site where the Zulu King Cetshwayo built his kraal — is administered by Amafa / Heritage KwaZulu Natali, the provincial heritage conservation agency for KwaZulu Natal, and houses one of the most representative collections of the rich heritage of Zulu culture.

Amafa also wanted to incorporate a cinema presentation as part of the experience, and contacted Johannesburg-based NEXO partner, Tadco, to provide a solution for the heritage site’s high-definition/surround sound requirements. Tadco was tasked with managing the project and given a hand in the content.

Says Tadco director, Richard Barnes, “We were awarded the contract on the strength of the installation work we carried out at De Beers Diamond World in Kimberley and also the 4D Odin Theatre at Gold Reef City.”

For the 160-seat auditorium, Tadco has installed a 5.1 surround system using NEXO PS Series cabinets. 2x PS10s are positioned L,C and R, the centre boxes behind a Harkness Hall acoustically transparent screen. 3x LS1200 subs are directly under the screen at floor level, while a couple of Quest HPI 8 cabinets handle the left and right rear. All processing is done on Symetrix DSP.

The official opening took place just before Christmas when the inauguration was attended by civic dignitaries including the present Zulu king, Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu.
