TECNOSON IN NEXO STM DOUBLE ACT AT CORONA CAPITAL FESTIVAL

Leading festival sound specialists Tecnoson Espectaculos returned to Mexico City’s grand prix circuit for the massive Corona Capital Festival, at the request of promoter OCESA.  As the principal rental company, Tecnoson again provided NEXO STM modular line arrays for the main Corona Stage as well as, for the first time, the new Corona Light stage, introduced this year.

For the 80,000 young music fans that attended the festival in stormy weather, the appeal of Corona Capital is its focus on mainstream, American and European bands that definitely have a thriving fan base in Mexico’s capital.  The lineup was impressive: Jack White and Kings of Leon served as headliners, alongside Beck, Massive Attack, Weezer, Damon Albarn, Belle & Sebastian, MGMT, HAIM, Lykke Li, St. Vincent, CHVRCHES, and Foster the People.  Also playing were Conor OberstSam Smith, Sky Ferreira, Kasabian, Little Dragon, Deafheaven, MØ, Melody’s Echo Chamber and Kodaline, among others.

For this major event, Tecnoson worked closely with ROA and STAR, two other STM rental houses, and this year, enlisted additional participation from Concept 3, Celso Moreno Backline and NEXO distributor REPSA to source NEXO GEO D and other cabinets.  With such rental resources, the Corona site became a NEXO showcase, with Alpha-e cabs, PS 15s, LS Series subs, 45°N-12 line monitors, GEO S12 and CD18 sidefills, and GEO T delay towers.  One of the festival highlights was young Swedish hip-hop artist Yung Lean, who blew away the ‘Claro Musica Bizco Club’ EDM tent equipped with a GEO S8 system and NEXO CD12 subs.

All systems were controlled and monitored from FOH by NUARs, NEXO Universal Amp Racks using NXAMP4x4s with NXES104 EtherSound Network Card TM.

To cap it all, this was the first festival appearance of the STM M28 downfills used on both the main stage systems.  The new STM M28 line array modules, air-freighted to Mexico City from Paris for the Corona Capital event, complete the impressive STM inventory present in Mexico.

The three STM system providers, Rodolfo Oropeza of ROA, STAR’s Hector Dominguez and Sergio Zenteno, owner of Techno Son, were among the first to visit NEXO’s Paris HQ to hear the new STM M28 cabinet.  Zenteno tells the story: “on that occasion, we listened to the M28 in an array of 12 cabinets, first on its own, then with 3x B112 bass cabinets in the array, and finally in a complete system with the S118 subs.  With the scale of the Corona Fest audiences, we were using much longer arrays: 18x M46 main cabinets, with the 3x M28 as downfills for the main stage arrays.  On the smaller Corona Light stage, it was 12x M46 main cabinets plus 3x M28s.

“The M28s are an important part of the solution for the front rows of the audience.  Offering between 30 ° and 45 ° vertical coverage and 120 ° in the horizontal plane, their presence in the line means that the M46 cabinets can be better used for the medium to long throw. From my point of view, the M28 is a vital piece for the whole STM system, as well as a new option for compact arrangements.”

“After a full year of shows with STM, I’d say we’ve discovered new and better ways to configure the S118 subs, to control horizontal dispersion and to eliminate filtering problems,” says Zenteno.  “New operators and new artists are discovering STM, and enjoying its performance.”
