One gigantic party held over 8 days in August, Malmöfestivalen is Scandinavia’s oldest city festival and, this year, bigger and better than ever.
With performances on more than 50 stages across the streets and squares of the city, the event inadvertently proved to be somewhat of an ‘open air PA showroom’, as sound systems from all major manufacturers could be heard within a short walk of each other.
On the Stora Scenen (main stage) it was a NEXO GEO D system designed and deployed by Fredrik Carlsson and the team at local Swedish sound rental company Event Solutions, as a subcontractor for Creative Technology Sweden.”
“We flew main left and right hangs of 24 x GEO D10, with outfills of 12 x GEO S1210 per side, plus an additional 4 x GEO S1230 for front fills” reports Fredrik.
“The sub array comprised of 28 x NEXO CD18s with all amplification and processing from NEXO NXAMP Powered TD Controllers – 4X4Mk2s for everything above 60Hz and 4X4Mk1s for everything below.”
Headline performances from The Ark, Oskar Linnros, Orup and others attracted crowds of up to 40,000 to Stortorget, the historic main square in the centre of Malmö, where the prevailing acoustics presented some challenges as visiting NEXO Engineering Support team member David Hochstenbach explains.
“In a highly reflective environment with walls everywhere, having full range active cardioid control proved to be very helpful. We also had to lean heavily on NS-1 (software) performance simulations as pink noise would not be welcome in a public space like this.
“However as soon as we opened the sound was ‘there’ and perfectly time aligned.
“I also have to commend Fredrik for maintaining his GEO D system so well over almost two decades” continues David.
“It’s been a while since I’ve had the chance to listen to a 24-per-side GEO D system, and the consistency and dynamics are amazing with excellent cardioid control and pristine HF.
“We got numerous comments on the sound quality from engineers throughout the event and even from the video and lighting guys.”
