BELGIUM’S VDB PA STOCKS UP WITH STM SERIES AHEAD OF PUKKELPOP

VDB PA in Belgium is reporting a busy summer, following its investment in additional NEXO STM Series line array modules to expand its existing inventory.

Jan Van den Brande, owner and proprietor of VDB, has boosted his stock of M46 and B112 main and bass sets, and doubled the number of STM S118 subbass cabinets. But critically, he has added a large quota of STM M28 units which can work as downfills with the M46 modules, or as main modules in their own right.

“We now have the ability to send out a ‘typical’ 12-a-side hang,” explains Van den Brande, “but even more important for us is the option to use them as two systems with 6 cabinets a side. In our opinion, this is one of the biggest benefits of using the B112 bass cabinet in a set with the M46 main module; even a 6 per side rig sounds massively powerful.”

VDB has been a NEXO customer for more than 20 years, although Jan Van den Brande is quick to point out that this doesn’t mean he automatically buys the new systems! “As long as they come up with gear we believe in, we will go for it!”

“STM is a good choice for us. We have a great variety of clients, from small to large. A small club event can be followed by a big festival the day after, and STM allows us to use the same system – we increase or decrease the number of cabinets but we get the same power and sound.”

The versatility of NEXO’s modular line array was underlined by the release of the ‘omnipurpose’ M28 module. “We are using M28 a lot – for smaller gigs, putting the M28 on top of a S118 sub is a perfect solution. But we are finding that more and more often, we use left and right stacks built out of STM S118 subs, B112 bass and M28 main cabinets. Putting a B112 between the subs and the main module produces the perfect height of stack, and the B112 ‘fattens up’ the whole sound. This configuration has replaced our classic Alpha E club stack, which served us so well for many years.”

VDB’s big summer assignment is the Pukkelpop Festival in August, where they provide sound for three stages. This year, they will be able to provide STM Series for the Castello and the Club stages, main PA systems with 18 sets of STM M46+B112 cabinets per side, with 24x S118 subs. A happy combination of old and new sees the legacy GEO D system paired with STM M28 as delays on the Lift stage.
