Located in the southern German town of Leonberg, Bowl & Co takes bowling to a whole new level. Visitors can enjoy a choice of 18 lanes, with state-of-the-art Spark™ technology on 8 lanes enabling the projection of custom photographs, game results and stats directly onto the lane, or play enhanced games with targets displayed directly on the tracks. And when the bowling is over, then it’s time to relax in the bar and restaurant, play darts or billiards, or perhaps take in a movie at the on-site IMAX cinema.

Central to the delivery of a thrilling visitor experience is a NEXO ID Series sound system installed by local audio-visual technology specialists Fein Media. Designed in collaboration with the NEXO Engineering Support team, the system provides the power and headroom to go way beyond background music and announcements, creating a party atmosphere in the venue, particularly on the regular DJ nights.

“Each pair of lanes is covered by a pair of NEXO’s compact ID24 speakers, with a pair of IDS110 subs in cardioid mode for every two double lanes” reports Mario Schmidt, Planning and Sales Manager at Karlsruhe-based Fein Media. “In addition, 6 x ID24s are complemented by a further 3 x IDS110 subs in the restaurant and lounge areas.”

Amplification and processing come from a rack of 7 x NEXO NXAMP4X1Mk2 powered controllers in a Dante network with a matrix mixer and wall-mounted control panels.

Measuring just 309mm wide, 132mm high and 233mm front to back, the ID24 is a compact full range speaker using twin 4-inch drivers in a V formation plus an HF compression driver with rotatable horn. The horn can be rotated easily without the need for tools by a ‘screw head’ on the rear panel to give 60° x 60°, 90° x 40°, 120° x 40°, 120° x 60° (according to horns) HF coverage with the standard horn fitted. This increases the flexibility of the cabinet by allowing the HF horizontal dispersion to be ‘tuned’ for the given application.

“As early as the planning phase I was convinced that this sound design would be the best solution for the venue” says Mario. “The unobtrusiveness of the speakers combined with their performance and the avoidance of unwanted LF in the bowling lanes by deploying subwoofers in cardioid mode led to an expectation of the best results and a high level of customer satisfaction. But it’s no exaggeration to say that the results exceeded even my expectations and those of our customer! The owner is planning another bowling centre and would also like to have this venue equipped by us exclusively with NEXO components.”
