In what we believe to be the first public North American appearance for NEXO's new GEO D system, San Diego-based Special Event Audio Services (SEAS) recently deployed 12x GEO D10 (6x per side) at Street Scene 2006. The Mission Valley, CA event is a multi-stage music festival that anually attracts 100,000+ people. Local marketing hype promotes the two-day extravaganza, staged at Qualcomm Stadium parking lot, as the "largest street fair” in the U.S.
Drama? Of course there was drama. Although SEAS received their new 24x box D rig a couple of weeks earlier, the entire package wasn't in place until the morning of Street Scene 2006's Thursday load in! The SEAS stage was one of several and was limited to a 1000lb(453.5Kg) fly weight (per hang, with only one point per) plus maximum trim height at about 20ft(6.1m). In addition, from the "added degree of difficulty" department, the relatively small GEO D system was positioned directly between two of the event's largest stages.
SEAS's owner and founder Mitch Grant explains: "The GEO D10 is really easy to fly. I purchased the Nexo wheel dollies that have the bottom supports for the rigging frame so that the speakers are transported vertically, three high, and are ready to lift off the dolly as soon as you hook up. Setting angles is easy as well and can be done with the rig in the air. Our stage rigging weight limit dictated that our maximum safe hang was going to be six boxes a side. All in all, it was a very simple process."
The system also featured 4x CD18s per side, with everything powered by QSC 6.0II amplifiers. Grant continues: "The CD18s are definitely a great compliment to the D10s (which is good, because I already have 16 of them!), but I’m still curious as to how the GEO SUB would change the sound of the rig."
An enthusiastic Grant concludes: "This is not your average P.A. system…..silky smooth top end, plenty of SPL, and boxes that look much too small to be putting out what you are hearing! There was NO harshness to the D sound, yet there was plenty of volume. Even with my six box a side limit, and the bigger, louder stages on my left and right, I was able to provide a satisfying and involving musical experience for the crowd at all times! We measured 107–108dbA weighted (slow response) peaks at the FOH mix position, which was just about 110ft(33.5m) from the stage."
